Matthew Sweet - Sunshine Lies (Shout Factory / Universal Music Canada)

A17

Since breaking through with his 1991 record Girlfriend, Matthew Sweet has been making some of the most irresistible power pop music known to man. On Sunshine Lies, his tenth record (not including his 2006 collaboration with former Bangle Susanna Hoffs), he continues this tradition quite capably, crafting his beautifully layered guitar pop on tracks like Time Machine, the title track, Around You Now and Byrdgirl. Sweet's dual personality of pop master and pop rocker lets itself be seen yet again and shows a surprisingly raw side on tracks such as Flying and Room To Rock. What makes this record an interesting listen is this very dynamic of Sweet balancing the sugary-sweet side with the more rock side of his work. While it has always existed throughout his career, it's at the forefront in the very best of ways here.

Matthew Sweet never fails to disappoint with his records and Sunshine Lies undoubtedly continues his streak of solid records. A must-have for all power pop fans.
