The New Brunswick Community College now has 4,390 acceptance letters to hand out to prospective international students.
That’s up an extra 1,595, after the federal government gave New Brunswick and a few other provinces a reprieve from the stringency of its cap for the school year ahead.
Meanwhile, the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick now has an extra 942 more, for a total of 2,798.
And l’Université de Moncton has 3,369 letters to hand out, up 1,193, while the University of New Brunswick has 2,051, up 749 from Ottawa’s original cap.
The Higgs government and the province’s post-secondary institutions complained to Ottawa that an initial cap on international students gave the province too few offer letters to hand out.
The province’s schools only see 30 to 40 per cent of the study offers it makes to international students actually result in a student coming to New Brunswick.
That resulted in the feds giving the province an extra 5,351 acceptance letters to hand out, for a total of 14,651.
The Higgs government has now allocated to the province’s post-secondary institutions those extra acceptance letters.
The new numbers show that the federal cap on students could now have little to no impact on the province’s institutions. There’s now the prospect that student numbers will stay the same, or even grow, if acceptance rates are similar to past years.
