Premiering projections go POP

Projected motion picture premieres and indie pop music meet for a multi-sensory rendezvous on the dance floor at the Paramount Lounge this Friday. DJ Bones (aka Marc Xavier LeBlanc) has been bringing folks together on the dance floor for years with his monthly Indie Pop Nights.

"This month [brings] not to be missed live audio/visual musical performances by Rich Aucoin and The First Aid Kit (both from Halifax)," says Bones. "The fun starts at 10 p.m. and I'll start off the night dj'ing a set of music and then we'll have a musical performance and then a bit more dj'ing and more live music and we'll finish off the night with me dj'ing to make you dance the night away."

Indie Pop Night caters to dancing fiends with discerning musical tastes that go beyond the stereotypical top 40 radio hits. If you haven't experienced an Indie Pop Night yet, you can expect to hear danceable tunes by bands such as: The Strokes, The Wombats, The Unicorns, Pony Up!, The Pipettes, Metric, Vampire Weekend, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Hidden Cameras, Belle and Sebastian, The Postal Service, The Shins and many more independent pop rock sensations.

In addition to running the Indie Pop Nights (which DJ Bones occasionally takes on the road to other venues around the Maritimes), Bones also hosts a radio show called 'La Photo Sonore' on CKUM 93.5fm and has an active career as a professional photographer. He's been nominated for "Photographer of the Year" for the past five years in a row at the East Coast Music Awards as well as "Media Personality of the Year" in 2008.

At this special Indie Pop Night, Rich Aucoin, will be presenting the world premiere of his latest sync/film, Public Publication. This project synchronizes live musical performance with video projections that he has personally edited together from several films including Carpa's It's a Wonderful Life and Romero's Night of the Living Dead, among many others. This project follows up his highly successful earlier project, Personal Publication, which synchronized live music with How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Personal Publication was honoured by Toronto's Eye Weekly as one of the Best Concerts of 2007, while Exclaim! Magazine described his live show as "extremely magical". When working on that project, he wrote: "What started as a solo recording project has turned into an engulfing year of church organs, theremins, vibraphones and grinches." After some legal copyright battles over using The Grinch, Aucoin has now created a new sync/film project that involves over 20 films, this time, all from the public domain. This special Indie Pop Night at the Paramount will be the world premiere of Public Publication, which, according to Aucoin, is meant to "uplift its listeners in celebrating the joy of life."

The other live musical act of the evening is the First Aid Kit from Halifax; a group that was featured in Best Albums of the Year by The Coast. They describe themselves as: "A rock 'n' roll-meets-indie-meets-pop band, [composing] songs layered thick with guitars and synths and packed to the edges with hooks. And [we] sing like [we] mean it." The First Aid Kit is made up of Conor Hancey, Matt Davidson, Craig Koziar, Amy Bollivar and Darryl Smith.

This jam packed evening of indie pop music, dancing, film projections, and live bands will be taking place Friday night, May 30, at 10 p.m. in the Paramount Lounge for the low, low cover cost of $5. So if you like to dance, if you like film, and if you like indie pop, you'd be a dunderhead not to attend.
