Randy Allain, 36, of Shediac, appeared in Moncton provincial court by phone from jail on Tuesday to plead to a series of charges but that didn’t happen. Instead, defence lawyer Guillaume LeBlanc told the judge he’s withdrawing from the case.

LeBlanc said there have been ongoing negotiations with the Crown’s office for several weeks but those talks are now at “a standstill.” He said it’s in Allain’s best interest to have legal aid give him a different lawyer and the accused agreed. He will return to court May 17 with the new lawyer to deal with the charges.

The RCMP released photos of Allain on Feb. 14, saying he was wanted in connection with an armed robbery, theft of vehicle and gas and breach of conditions. Police said he could have a firearm and should be considered armed and dangerous.

That same day they updated the release to indicate Allain was arrested.

The charges date to Feb. 10. and include: using a handgun to rob Rosana Lafuente of her 2023 Toyota Corolla, pointing a firearm at her, kidnapping her to confine her against her will, using a handgun to rob Janice Thebeau of her 2010 Kia Magentis, stealing Ronald Thebeau’s Kia Magentis, carrying a handgun for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed handgun and using a firearm to commit theft.

On Tuesday he was charged with stealing gas from Petro-Canada in Moncton on Feb. 10.

Allain was refused release after a bail hearing and will remain in jail until his case ends.
