The West District RCMP issued a news release Sunday saying Jared Smith was arrested Saturday after a 54-year-old woman was found dead at a home in the community. Police responded to a call for service at around 12:30 p.m. before finding the body.

Smith appeared in provincial court Sunday via tele-remand and was charged with second-degree murder, police said in the release. He’s scheduled to return to court Monday.

“The New Brunswick RCMP’s Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation and treating the incident as a homicide,” the release states.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact the Major Crime Unit at 1-888-506-RCMP (7267).
