The Two Fat Guys loosen their belts at Jean's

The Two Fat Guys head to Jean's St. George St. location.
Jean's Restaurant is located at 369 St. George St. It's a small diner that specializes in breakfast, the all-day variety, and home-style cooking. So these Two Fat Guys decided to head on over and check it out. For more information or to order take-out, please call the diner directly at 855-1053. The diner opens at 5:45 a.m. seven days a week, and closes at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they close at 10 p.m.
The Fat Guy's verdict:
What to say about Jean's? I've been there before for their incredibly huge breakfast platter full of sausage, ham, bacon, three eggs, toast and coffee. I see Jean's as a nice alternative for breakfast on those long weekends, when you really don't want to get up early and try to beat the rush or make it for the breakfast special "" because these guys make breakfast all day.
The place was pretty packed, it was close to noon, so I hung out on a bar stool at the counter, reading a paper waiting for a booth to open. I have to say I love eating in a booth and will wait twice as long to get one. Our servers were both nice and cordially made suggestions.
After a lengthy debate, with the server helping me make a choice, I opted to try something a little outside the usual breakfast fare today "" namely their eggs benedict ($7.99). Two poached eggs, on toasted English muffins with a very thick slice of ham and smothered in sauce. They also have potatoes grilled on the side; it comes with onions if you like that sort of thing.
I'm a huge fan of eggs benny in general "" but it's got to be just so. I ordered my eggs medium poached, and they arrived as desired, not too soft and not too hard. The sauce was a little piquant and unusual; I liked it - there was a smattering of herbs, maybe parsley? It was hard to tell, but it definitely improved the flavour of the hollandaise sauce, which was probably delicious to begin with.
I was really impressed by the huge slab of ham. If anything Jean's doesn't skim on serving sizes. Whatever you order always comes in large enough portions to satisfy.
For breakfast, I definitely give Jean's praise. Next time I get a spare in the evening; I'll drop in and see what kind of supper selection they have. But for now, I give Jean's 8/10, which is high marks for a picky Fat Guy like me.
Fatter Guy's verdict:
Jean's Restaurant has lately become a new addition to my weekend breakfast routine. Though I normally head over to the location on Mountain Rd. (near Gorge Rd.) my fat friend and I headed out to the St. George St. location recently to test it out.
The St. George St. location boasts some large booths and of course, the diner staple: bar stools surrounding the 'bar'. Now that I think about it, I wish I had gotten a chocolate milkshake to see if Jean's stands up to my view of how a diner should make a milkshake.
I came there with a plan and of course, Fatty had to ruin it by getting breakfast. Not only did he choose breakfast, but he also chose my new favourite dish at Jean's Restaurant - the eggs benedict.
I was less than happy.
Since Fatty and I try to eat different meals at restaurants (for variety's sake), I checked out the menu for something else.
But since Jean's does breakfast so well, I wasn't sure what else was one of their staple meals. I have had their lasagna and caesar before (it was great), but this was little after noon, and I thought something more lunch-like was in order.
In the end I went with the clubhouse platter - which was a turkey, bacon, tomato and lettuce sandwich with onion rings and french fries for $8.95. I'm not a big fan of mayo so I asked for my sandwich without it. Normally butter is substituted for mayo without asking, but this time nothing was placed on the toast. I should have specified no mayonnaise, but butter. The naked toast, along with the white turkey, helped make the sandwich quite dry.
As much as I don't like mayo, I was kinda wishing I hadn't omitted it from my sandwich. I actually began dipping the sandwich into Fatty's hollandaise sauce to give it some kick. Then I started dipping my fries into it...man Jean's hollandaise sauce is good.
The homes-style fries and onion rings were great. I expected the platter to simply include fries, so the added onion rings were definitely an added surprise.
Our server was attentive and friendly, and helped us with our decisions. A friend also had the burger and said it 'hit the spot'.
Though my sandwich wasn't great, this doesn't change my love for Jean's breakfasts and other meals I've had there. Though I can only give it 7/10 rating this time around, I still highly recommend trying Jean's out.
