Die Mannequin - Unicorn Steak (How To Kill / Warner Music Canada)
Guitar-rock bands aren't a rarity at all these days; listeners just have to learn to separate the good from the not so great. Falling into the good category is this release from Toronto's Die Mannequin. Comprised of 10 songs (eight of which have been previously released on two separate EP's), one listen to Unicorn Steak and it's easy to see why they were chosen to open for bands as diverse as Guns N Roses and Sum 41. Their highly melodic sound combines metal and some subtle industrial influences with hard rockin' guitars. Leading the charge is Care Failure's powerful vocals and while highlights like Lonely Of A Woman, Do It or Die and Autumn Cannibalism could have just as easily been sung by a male, would they have been quite as memorable? Methinks not. Support rockin' Canadian talent and give these guys a shot. - Ken Kelly
