Hynes serves up homecooked goodies

The Two Fat Guys have some breakfast, just not together.
Hynes Restaurant is located at 495 Mountain Rd. Known to many in Moncton as a great little diner, Hynes is open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, don't hesitate to call the establishment directly at 382-3432.
The Fat Guy's verdict:
For almost 50 years, Hynes has been serving up food to Greater Monctonians. I myself can be a little biased when it comes to this place. As a kid I considered breakfast at Hynes my reward for attending church. I didn't terribly care for sitting still for an hour, but even as a young child I did show a propensity for eating lots of food. I was a Fat Guy in the making.
As an adult, I've been rewarding myself with Hynes for breakfast for years, and I've always considered it one of the best places to get breakfast in the area. The service is fast and dependable, and I've never been disappointed.
So a bit before 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Fatter Guy rang me up for our weekly date. Now I actually slept through his call and he went to breakfast on his own. (He's still a little grumpy about it actually and his voice mail was tinged with his signature passive-aggressiveness. Regardless, I really enjoyed sleeping in.) So a while later at a less ungodly time, I went to Hynes on my own.
If you can stomach getting to Hynes early, which as I've just illustrated I can't, they have a breakfast special that runs from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. sharp. The special includes two eggs, pan fries, sausages, bacon or ham with toast, tea, coffee or a small juice for $4.99. That's probably the best deal in town.
If you're there at 11:30, there's no use negotiating with the waitress, they will not be budged.
As it stands I got the exact same order as described above, except I added ham (yeah, I like ham AND bacon). The meal was $5.49, plus pan fries $0.99, and some ham for $2.25???? Now I can't be relied up on to do math, but as far as I'm concerned that's a very good deal.
One of the great things about going to Hynes is that if you're there once a month, you become a regular. Expect big greeting and smiles either way. It's a very comfortable place at any time of day. But beware the 11 a.m. church crowd, they're fierce.
For doing what they do well, this Fat Guy gives Hynes 8 out of 10.
Fatter Guy's verdict
There's nothing this Fatty likes better on the weekend than sleeping in. The thought of staying under the covers past 7:30 a.m. is what helps get me through the work week. So it came as a bit of a surprise to the other Fat One when I rang him before 10 a.m. (45-60 minutes prior to the usual weekend breakfast wake up call) to head out to eat. I was hungrier than normal on this beautiful Saturday morning, and I wasn't going to wait for the ol' slow poke.
I sauntered off with some other people who are used to getting up earlier than 10 a.m. on the weekend to Hynes, pretty much the mainstay in my weekend breakfast routine. Sure I head to other places occasionally, but most of the time my butt is in the seats at Hynes Restaurant for their homecooked meals.
Now do not be daunted by what's likely to be a long line of hungry patrons when you head into the restaurant. Even when it has curled around and come as close to the front door as you can get, it still doesn't seem to take very long. They move pretty quickly here.
I was seated upon entry with my party of five on this day, and I'd guess the lack of line may have been because I was there earlier than usual (apparently it pays to be eager on the weekend).
I ordered the deluxe omelet ($5.99) which includes a small juice, tea or coffee. I also ordered a side of pan fries, on the grill with onions for 99 cents. The deluxe omelet includes green peppers, cheese, ham and tomatoes. The pan fries were great; I was trying to explain to someone while eating at another restaurant that the pan fries were just too 'potato-like' and starchy, lacking some flavour. This wasn't the case at Hynes, my only complaint would be that they were a tad warm, a bit on the cool side.
I've had issues in this column before with omelets I have received at certain restaurants, one being an omelet so fluffy, I couldn't fully enjoy what was on the inside. Hynes' deluxe omelet wasn't too fluffy and it was chock full of the ingredients mentioned above. Every bite was full of cheese and peppers, or cheese and tomatoes and ham...just delicious.
There's just something about Hynes that I really enjoy. The food is pretty much what you would prepare at home, and for me, that's comforting. There's no pomp and circumstance about it. It is what it is.
For keeping my belly full week after week with friendly, quick service with a smile and homecooked meals, I give Hynes 8.5/10.
